The SteigtUM! project will turn Freiberg in Saxony into a living lab for a highly innovative and at the same time eco-friendly transport system. Partners from science, the housing industry and administration are setting up a rental system for electric cargo bikes for private and commercial trips in the city.

Researchers from a variety of different disciplines are working closely together to realise this in a joint project under the leadership of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg:

  • The Institute of Machine Elements of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF) is designing a lightweight, cargo pedelec ("CityPed") that is attuned to Freiberg's topography and roads and can be moved easily by users on their everyday business.
  • A simple, autonomous rental and charging infrastructure for users is being developed at the Institute of Electrical Engineering at TUBAF. This essentially consists of an inductive power transmission system for contact-free charging at the rental stations.
  • A user-friendly app for the rental system and the overall data management system that is needed come from the Department of Operating Systems and Communication Technology at the Institute for Computer Science of TUBAF together with apromace data systems GmbH from Freiberg.
  • The living lab receives substantial input from various user surveys by staff at the Institute of Psychology at Chemnitz University of Technology as well as an examination of pertinent legal questions by researchers at TU Braunschweig.
  • Other partners in the project are the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems in Dresden and Projektionisten GmbH from Hannover. These address the complementary use of electrically-powered cargo trailers and how to link the rental system to the mobility services of the regional transportation authority.

At present, staff of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg can use the cargo bikes as part of the living lab phase that has already begun. They will be joined from March 2022 by the first renters from a municipal housing association in Freiberg as possible users. The system will be gradually improved and optimised using the feedback from the living lab.

The project is being supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. A total of € 5.5 million are available up to 2023.
