Commuting is Out! How Can We Bring the Workplace Closer to Home?

Mobile work is currently the daily routine for a number of professionals. The topic of the SIH project HomeTownOffice is how flexible forms of work can be organised in future and which opportunities different regions in Saxony can exploit for this.

The idea behind a “HomeTownOffice” is very easy to explain: companies, authorities and other institutions offer satellite workplaces in the environs of larger towns and cities. Employees who live in the surrounding area can carry out their work in these tele-workplaces close to home, but under professional conditions.

Three simul+ workshops on “HomeTownOffice” were held in December 2020. These workshops were prepared and presented by Silicon Saxony e.V. on behalf of the Saxon State Ministry for Regional Development. The 53 registered participants came from administration, various companies, municipalities, LEADER regions and universities.

The offer of a workplace “between the office in town and a home office” met with a great deal of interest. But some as yet unsettled matters also became clear: for example, what could suitable operating and financing models look like? Which legal requirements have to be met? Can cooperation projects and mixed uses help to not only create attractive job offers but also have positive effects on local life?

We are continuing to pursue the topic under the simul+ umbrella and will keep you up to date on this website.
